Q: What can I expect in my weekly ‘Shroom Share?
A: Your weekly 1½ pounds of mushrooms will be our own, Siena Farms grown mushrooms, picked fresh every morning. Currently we are growing shiitakes and blue oyster mushrooms, though we will continue trialing other varieties such as lion’s mane, chestnut oysters, pioppiono, and king oysters, and work toward an increasing diversity of shrooms for your share.
Mushroom production is a relatively new project for us here at Siena Farms, and so far it has been a whole lot of fun, with very delicious results! Late in 2017 we built out the old field-stone cellar of the “Little Barn” here on the farm and turned it into a mushroom cave. Simple controls of temperature, humidity, light and air exchange (like us, mushrooms breath in oxygen and produce CO2) has enabled a steady, year-round harvest of fresh mushrooms to now offer to our customers.
