Q: Yum, Yum, Yum, I can’t wait! But can you tell me more about what will be in each week’s box?
A: Each box will be a little bit different, and like the farm’s veggie CSA boxes, a lovely surprise each week. The Sofra Share will include a mix of sweet items (cookies, pastries, granola) and savory items (oven-ready meals, meze, snacks, spices) and will be mostly (but not exclusively) vegetarian. The Oleana Share will be more like a “take-out” dinner to enjoy from the comfort of your home — all vegetarian — and including fan favorites such as kohlrabi and hazelnut soup; carrot baba ganoush with spiced pumkin seeds; cauliflower and onion fatteh with black cumin, yogurt and pinenuts; profiteroles for two; you get the idea… And, like all of our CSA shares, you’ll receive a newsletter each week with info about each item.
Q: How big are the shares? How many people will they typically feed? How will it be packaged/delivered?
A: Both shares will be packed in third-bushel waxed boxes (same size box as our Kids’ and Mushroom shares). All items within the box will be in their own containers, the boxes will be lined as needed to protect from the elements, and transport and delivery will be made in temperature controlled vans. The volume in each box can be thought of as a full meal for two, happily shared among a larger group of snackers, or quietly coveted for a single diner.
Q: Will these shares be customized for dietary restrictions or individual preferences?
A: They will not. They’ll contain a wide range of ingredients during the course of the share, thus not a recommended option for those with food allergies.
Q: This is like the best idea EVER! How did it come to be?
A: It’s a model we’ve contemplated before, but it feels especially important and timely right now. Every restaurant in the area — perhaps every restaurant on the planet — is facing fundamental challenges to its business model during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thinking outside of the box (get it?) will be necessary, especially as we head into the winter when outdoor seating is not an option, and indoor dining is still limited. We hope this new way of sourcing the beautiful flavors of Sofra and Oleana will help bring joy, health, and sustenance to your own dining rooms during the coming months, while they also help sustain the restaurant businesses and staff through a period of historic change.
